Grace Mehm

Oboe, Piano, and Music Theory Instructor

Grace Mehm holds a Master's Degree in Oboe Performance from the Bob Cole Conservatory of music at California State University, Long Beach. At the Cole Conservatory she had the privilege of studying oboe and English horn with Carolyn Hove. Her Bachelor's Degree, also in Oboe Performance, is from the Hartt School of Music of the University of Hartford in West Hartford, Connecticut. While there she studied with oboist Humbert Lucarelli.

Grace has been teaching oboe for over 10 years. She has extensive experience teaching private and group lessons, including lessons in Piano, English Horn, reed making, and Music Theory. Her students have gone on to win scholarships and place in honor orchestras. As a current member of the Music Teachers' Association of California (MTAC), her oboe and piano students have the opportunity to participate in their annual Certificate of Merit examination. Grace loves working with students of all ages and experience levels. Her students enjoy coming to their lessons and learning something new each week. 

Locally, Grace is the Woodwind coach at San Clemente High School. She was previously the Double Reed coach at Mira Costa High School. She has also performed as a member of the Dana Point Symphony, Symphony Irvine, as well as other groups around Southern California. Previously, she was a long time member of the Cheshire Symphony.

Claire Mehm

Cello Instructor

Claire Mehm received her Master’s of Music in cello performance from California State University Long Beach’s Cole Conservatory of Music where she was a student of Dr. David Garrett, cellist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. She has performed in the Los Angeles Cello Society concert series and as a participant in the California Chamber Music Institute. She has attended the Los Angeles Suzuki Institute and trained in Suzuki pedagogy with Rick Mooney and Tanya Carey.

Prior to her studies at CSULB, Claire attended the University of Hartford’s Hartt School of Music where she received her Bachelor’s of Music in cello performance. While at Hartt, she studied with Steven Thomas and Mihai Tetel.

She was a founding member of the Los Angeles based cello quartet, Love4Cello. She also served as co-executive director and cello teacher for the Pasadena Cello Institute. Currently, Claire is a member of the Dana Point and the Huntington Beach Symphony Orchestras. In addition to being the cello coach at Renaissance High School for the Arts in Long Beach, she is also a cello teaching artist for the Los Angeles Philharmonic through Youth Orchestra Los Angeles at the East Los Angeles Performing Arts Magnet. Since 2008, she has freelanced and taught privately around the Los Angeles and Orange County areas.
